SUSPENSION OF POULTRY AND EGG
IMPORTS FROM SELANGOR, MALAYSIA |

The Malaysian Department of Veterinary
Services (DVS) informed the Agri- Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) this
morning (6 Jun 2007) that it had detected an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu
in chickens in a village household in Sungei Buluh, Selangor. |
|
About 60 chickens had died as a result of
the outbreak. Although the poultry and layer farms in Selangor that have
been approved to export to Singapore are bio-secured, AVA is suspending
poultry and egg imports from Selangor as a precautionary measure with
immediate effect. |
|
Poultry imports from the disease-free zones
of Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan and Perak will not be affected by this
suspension. This is in line with the established protocol between the
veterinary authorities of the two countries for poultry imports from
disease-free zones in Malaysia. |
|
AVA will continue to remain on high alert
and work closely with DVS to monitor the development of the disease
situation to ensure that poultry and eggs imported from Malaysia do not
compromise public and animal health. |

Supply of Poultry and Eggs in Singapore |
|
Malaysia supplies 3.6 million poultry and
83.7 million eggs per month to Singapore. Imports from Selangor
constitute only about 1% of the poultry and 6% of the egg imports from
Malaysia. As such, the impact of the suspension of poultry and egg
imports from Selangor on our poultry and egg supplies is not
significant. |

AVA reassures the public that we will
maintain vigilance to ensure that Singapore remains free from bird flu. |
|
We will also step up surveillance and
inspections at the points of entry to prevent the incursion of the
disease. Local poultry farms and slaughterhouses have also been
told to remain vigilant and maintain their biosecurity measures. |
|
AVA wishes to reiterate that poultry
and poultry products here are safe for consumption. |
