Police raided 3 internet cafes at in Geylang
on 9 November 07, which resulted in the arrest of 15 men and 3 women
aged between 18 and 47 years old. |

Acting on information received, Police
quickly established that three Internet cafes along Geylang Lorong 17
and 18 were involved in the provision of illegal online gambling games. |
|
On 9 Nov, Police officers from the Gambling
Suppression Branch conducted a 3-hour operation, in which 84 computers,
21 fruit machines and cash of more than S$20,000 were seized. |

Investigations revealed that four of those
arrested (two men and two women) were gaming in the internet cafes while
3 men were in charge of the cafes' operations. The former will be
produced in Court on 13 Nov (Tuesday) for an offence of gaming in a
common gaming house under Section 7 of the Common Gaming Houses Act,
Chapter 49. |

If found guilty, they will be liable to a
fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or
to both. The latter will also be produced in Court on the same date for
assisting in the management of a common gaming house under Section
4(1)(c), Chapter 49, under which they may be liable to a fine of between
$5,000 and $50,000 and also imprisonment of not more than 3 years. |

The remaining 11 accused persons have been
released on bail, pending further investigations. |

The operation is part of on-going Police’s
efforts in suppressing illegal gambling activities in Singapore . Head
of Gambling Suppression Branch, DSP Chia Tang Heng says, “The Police
will continue to take strong enforcement actions against such illegal
activities.” |
